Grove Street Corridor Improvements

About the Project

The Village of Arlington Heights Public Works Engineering Division has received numerous requests for improvements to the signage for various intersections along Grove Street from Gibbons Avenue to Dale Avenue in the vicinity of Prospect High School.  After reviewing crash data, traffic counts, and the existing signage along the entire corridor for Grove Street, the Village is proposing changes to five of the nine intersections.  In reference to the enclosed exhibit, all yield signs will be removed and the following intersections will have stop signs installed:

  • Forrest Ave and Grove St
Change from two-way stop control to ALL WAY STOP CONTROL

  • Phelps Ave and Grove St
Existing yield signs will be replaced with stop signs (no change to configuration)

  • Donald Ave and Grove St
Existing yield signs will be removed and stop signs will be installed on Donald Ave (new configuration)

  • Rammer Ave and Grove St
Existing yield signs will be removed, establish ALL WAY STOP CONTROL (new configuration)

  • Evanston Ave and Grove St
Existing yield signs will be removed and stop signs will be installed on Evanston Ave (new configuration)

The intent is to improve safety at these intersections and to create a more consistent and intuitive traffic pattern within the neighborhood. The Village wanted to provide the residents that will be impacted the most with advance notice of the warranted changes.

We also understand that once implemented, some of these changes will require an adjustment period to familiarize drivers with the new traffic pattern intended to improve safety for all roadway users. Once installed, new signs will have flags alerting drivers to the change, and the Police Department will be present at the intersections near Prospect High School during the morning and afternoon rush hours. The Village is also in communication with Prospect High School regarding the warranted changes.

The proposed changes are tentatively scheduled to be presented to the Village Board at the March 21, 2022 Board meeting.  Comments will be accepted until by March 16, 2022.
